I'm moving into the stage of life where my skin no longer suffers from erratic "teenage" breakouts, and I'm more focused on preserving my glow for eternity. I can't say that my skin is #flawless, but it is quite even for the most part. My concern right now is uneven texture, dryness, and fading spots left over from former breakouts. A lot of this can be helped by drinking more water and less coffee/cream, but there's only so much you can do day-to-day.
As someone who has used salicylic acid and lactic acid religiously for the past 10 years, I'm honestly shocked at how much I adore the new Retinol Ceramide Capsules Line Erasing Night Serum from Elizabeth Arden. They cost $84.00 for 60 pieces, or $48.00 for 30 pieces, and though this is an investment option for your skincare routine - I can't imagine life without them.
What is Retinol?
Topical vitamin A, or "retinoids" are the most popular anti-aging compounds. Retinoids reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color. Retinol (type of retinoid) causes exfoliation by pushing younger cells up, accelerating cell turnover. Whereas "acids" like AHA and BHA are chemical exfoliants that destroy the top layer cells (epidermis or stratum corneum), they are both getting to an exfoliative process, but through different mechanisms. The Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules promise to erase your fine lines and even out the texture of your skin. This serum comes housed in these adorable pink pods, and can be torn open to dispense one application of the serum - this covers my face, neck and decolletage. I will apply this serum 2-3 times per week, since you'll still see results and this will prolong the life of one bottle.
To open capsules:
Gently twist tab around twice and squeeze onto fingertipsTo use:
Smooth serum over face and neck each night before your moisturizer.Note: Don’t use benzoyl peroxide at the same time as retinol - it can deactivate it. Use retinol at night and bp in the am, if you're suffering from more intense breakouts.
Key Benefits
- Visibly diminishes lines & wrinkles
- Improves skin texture and tone
- Improves radiance & clarity
- Minimizes the look of pores
- Diminishes appearance of age spots and discolorations
- Moisturizes skin; non-drying formula
This luxurious, lightweight, semi-translucent serum combines two of the biggest names in skincare in one, easy-to-use capsule:
- Retinol, the clinically proven wrinkle-smoother
- Moisture-boosting ceramides to protect against the dryness often associated with retinol
As someone with very sensitive skin, I might apply my retinol or acids only on certain parts of my skin that need brightening and cell turnover - top of the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks. I find that I'll get dryness around the corners of my nose, and the skin becomes itchy and flaky. Be aware of these minor reactions because it seems like this area on me is too thin for exposure to exfoliating treatments.
Unlike some "old-school" retinol products that can be harsh, this formula by Elizabeth Arden is silky and smooth, making your skin feel comfortable and hydrated - not at all tight. It is truly a retinol for everyone. Finally.

Even the folks in my Toronto Makeup Zone group are on the retinol bandwagon! Here's a post from a few months ago:
Also need to give a shout out to the OG Elizabeth Arden product, Eight Hour Cream:
I used to use this all the time on my healing breakouts, and chapped lips. It's a lifesaving, multi-purpose salve enriched with healing plant extracts.
