I have expensive taste where foundation and concealer is concerned. Though I will gladly use Rimmel Wake Me Up, Match Perfection or Maybelline for a light-coverage look, I turn to MAC, It Cosmetics and Tarte for a no-fuss base. Besides, it's really hard to find drugstore concealers that go light enough to suit my winter skin.
I am oily/combo and absolutely must use a primer on my face and eyes to ensure my makeup lasts all day. I also have an uneven skin tone that needs some gentle correcting, so I was thrilled to receive the products swatched below.
Concealer and Eye Base Swatches |
The "All I Need" conceal and correct palette is a cool drugstore staple that works pretty well. I only use the pink and lightest two concealer shades, so the two end shades are not up my alley.
"All I Need" conceal and correct palette $6.99 |
Less is more with these dry, waxy creams, and you really need to use your fingers or a brush to warm up the product and work it into the skin. don't go heavy handed since the oils will build up and make your makeup fall apart. A little bit of the pink corrector under my eyes to fix dark circles, and the lightest two shades as concealer over top (and on spots) works great for a basic face. I usually pair this palette with my Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation. Here are some of my top correctors, swatched for comparison:
Essence is by far the most pink out of the mix, so I make sure to apply my foundation and/or concealer over the top to blend it out. My dark circles are totally fixed with it, though. |
2in1 Eyeshadow and Primer in 02 nude rose and 01 nude beige - $5.49 |
I LOVE THESE EYESHADOW PRIMERS!! I can't say it loud enough! These are the perfect dupes to MAC's iconic Paint Pot, and they work way better, IMO. Smooth, concealing, not drying, cute packaging. I use the yellow-toned one all the time and it keeps my shadow in place for 12hrs+. Buy the 2in1 Eyeshadow and Primer here for only $5.49.
Colour correcting mattifying powder in 10 beautiful finish - $4.49 |
My final face product is Essence's Colour correcting mattifying powder. I was hoping for the texture of this powder to be a bit softer, I find that the pigmentation just isn't there to suit my needs. I'm a loyal fan of Rimmel Stay Matte, so this white-toned powder is too hard to apply with a fluffy brush. 10 points for the outstanding rockstar cookie though, and more points for their original mattifying powder here that has good reviews.
Essence cosmetics are sold at Shoppers Drug Mart, and online for Canadians.
