Wet n Wild Reviews | Blushes, Contour Palettes & Highlighters

Some of my first-ever makeup buys were from wet n wild. YouTube stars raved on and on about the Color Icon Blush in Heather Silk, the 8-Pan Comfort Zone Eyeshadow Palette, and the Color Icon Bronzer (um, highlight) in Reserve Your Cabana. Two of those classic favourites were featured here in my 2014 "10 Drugstore Makeup Items", and they're still going strong in the beauty community today.

Color Icon™ Blush $5

The classic Color Icon Blushes have been reformulated and repackaged for 2016. Over the months I've been testing out the four swatched above, and I am pleased. Though vibrant shades are beautiful, the buttery pigmentation can be a bit hard to work with. The intense pigment creates a lot of "kickback" when I tap my brush into the pan, and powders do not adhere to my foundation as well as my higher-end blushes. These are some of the most pigmented blushes at the drugstore, but the colour intensity might fade or become patchy throughout the day if you have combo-oily skin like mine. Note that the flimsy packaging and tiny brush are nothing to write home about. It would be great if they could invest in using the same bristles that they have in their new brush line, along with including a small mirror.

I always noticed this highlighter on YouTube being featured as the best highlighter from the drugstore. I tracked it down a few years ago at Walmart, and I've enjoyed it ever since. A beautiful champagne shimmer in a massive 4-inch compact that will last a lifetime.

To Reflect Shimmer Palette in I'll Have a Cosmo, Boozy Brunch (light), Sand-Gria Castles $7

Yes, these highlighters are fun and good, but I hate the packaging. They're way too tacky, impractical for my on-the-go lifestyle, and the shades themselves are quite glittery. If you have darker skin, Sand-Gria Castles has a really pretty golden-bronze glow that will surely enhance your complexion.

MegaGlo™ Illuminating Powder in Catwalk Pink $6

Ah, the overspray! I wasn't surprised to see that this intense 4-tone highlighter is a simple pink shimmer underneath the top layer, but it's creamy and pigmented nonetheless. I'm not ready to venture into the intensely-pink highlighter zone right now, so I'll reserve this illuminating power for halloween/body shimmer. When I'll be looking for body shimmer? I couldn't tell you. But one day.

MegaGlo™ Contouring Palette $6

I was so excited to get my hands on these contour palettes, and I'm really happy with the result. Caramel Toffee is my go-to since the yellow powder is probably a bit too intense for my pink-toned skin. If you're looking for a Ben Nye "banana powder" dupe to brighten up the under-eye, look no further. These massive palettes are not for a travel makeup bag, but I do enjoy the generous size. Watch out for some serious fallout when you tap your brush into these highly pigmented powders. As long as I set my makeup base (Smashbox CC cream) with powder (Laura mercier Pressed Minerals) these silky powders apply very nicely. I use the bright nude-pink under my eyes and on the cheekbones, while the contour gives a natural, bronzy finish. You can see them in my makeup look below.

With so many fun products in this new collection, I'll admit that I'm disappointed in the packaging. It's bulky, cheap, and overzealous. The sealing stickers are impossible to remove, and they leave sticky residue behind. I also found that many compacts were just hard to open in general - I had to use tweezers or a dull knife to wedge the lids open. Though the overarching quality of wet n wild products is awesome for the price, I prefer smaller, more discreet makeup products in my makeup bag.
