HowTo Style A Button-Down Shirt

{Sources linked below}

One of the most timeless wardrobe items has to be a crisp white button-down shirt. My favourite style is long and boxy, which can often be found in the mens department. But you don't need to spend a fortune on a good white shirt - browse through the clearance section of a department store, or (for a more economical option) even your dad's closet.

When shopping for a white dress shirt, keep in mind that pieces made from 100% cotton get wrinkly and will attract lint like crazy. Try to find a shirt made from a blend of polyester, cotton, or silky modal.

1. Paired with a statement necklace and boyfriend jeans

This is a great way to show off a beautiful necklace and ensure that the neckline doesn't get too risqué. I also love how this shirt has a tie at the bottom, which would look really cute with some shorts.

2. Layered under a crew neck sweater

This look is wonderful for the winter. A merino or cashmere sweater will keep you warm, and you can still layer up under the loose shirt. It is both office appropriate and easy to wear causally.

3. Belted at the waist with a skirt

Throwing a belt over a boxy top can give it a super feminine vibe. This outfit works just as well with a more professional pencil skirt as it does with a comfy maxi. If you opt for wearing a tank or tee, keep a shirt in your bag to sling over your shoulders when it cools down in the evening.

4. Belted at the waist with a scarf

This is such a unique pairing, and it has seriously inspired me to pull out my silk scarves more often. I love how this particular shirt is long enough to wear as a dress. Another cute option would be to wear it untucked and unbelted, layered over some leggings:

5. Rolled at the sleeves and tucked into belted jeans

Julie is always so edgy and cool, but this look is definitely one of my favourites. For summertime, I'd switch the long jeans to denim shorts and throw on some mixed gold chains.

I've also been loving more flared out jeans (see my Toronto Fashion Week post here) and this classy outfit from Mary is a perfect example that's both sophisticated and timeless.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to styling a button-down shirt. And the colour doesn't always have to be white! Each of these looks would be equally as chic with a blue oxford shirt, chambray, or even a stripe print.

    1. Hey Angela! Thanks for the comment. It's hard to find a match made in heaven when it comes to shirts and sweaters, but I find that a looser sweater with a higher is definitely a good call. Have a good weekend! x
